In order to ensure the fresh and beautiful appearance of bamboo chopsticks, some food additives, such as food-grade sulfur and food-grade sodium pyrosulfite, are often used in processing. Excessive use of these additives will lead to excessive microbial and residual indicators of bamboo chopsticks, which will bring harm to consumers'health. Therefore, the hygienic problem of bamboo chopsticks has always been the focus of attention of consumers and importing countries.
 
Starting from further strengthening the quality awareness of bamboo chopstick industry, providing more targeted health standards for bamboo chopstick manufacturers and export enterprises, promoting the development of foreign trade and protecting the rights and interests of consumers and health, China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Food, Native Animals and Animals called for and formally applied for the formulation of mandatory national standards for bamboo chopsticks. In July 2003, the National Standardization Management Committee approved that the Branch of Sanitary Chopsticks and the Department of Animal and Plant Quarantine and Supervision of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine were jointly responsible for formulating the national standard of disposable chopsticks and bamboo chopsticks.
 
Considering the professionalism and technology of disposable bamboo chopsticks, Hunan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and Sanitary Chopsticks Branch, which undertook the drafting work, listened extensively to the opinions of the personnel and other experts of the disposable bamboo chopsticks production and export enterprises, forestry system, health system and quality supervision system, and collected samples of bamboo chopsticks from more than 40 enterprises in China. According to the investigation and Study on the requirements of disposable chopsticks in Japan, the national standard of "Bamboo Sanitary Chopsticks" was completed on April 8, 2005 on the basis of extensive consultation with various opinions. On the 28th of the same month, the standard was certified to be practical, scientific and effective, and passed the examination and approval smoothly.
